Step 4 - Build a PC to run as your PizzaBox File Server Server

The minimum specification for a PC to run the PizzaBox File Server Distribution is :-

  • 486DX, the spec of the processor depends entirely on how many users you have, and what they are doing. Generally, the speed of a file server is not limited by the CPU, so a powerful processor is not usually necessary.
  • 16Mb RAM - suitable for up to about 10 users - as with most modern servers, there is no such thing as too much RAM. Note, on some older BIOSes the PizzaBox File Server may not automatically detect more than 64Mb of RAM.
  • 300Mb IDE Hard Disk, The operating system and swap space will take about 100Mb, so this is a reasonable minimum. Of course, this wouldn't leave much room for data, so a larger disk would be recommended.
  • NE2000 Network card - see the hardware guide for more details on other supported network cards
  • For installation ONLY you will also need a 1.44Mb floppy drive, Screen and Keyboard.
Once you have built your PizzaBox File Server Server you can proceed to Step 5.
